You're Entertaining

Yesterday I was teaching this group that is composed of mostly Finnish people. They are a little annoying in that they already know everything. I was a little "off my game" because my memory stick wouldn't fit into the computer and I had to work with PowerPoint slides off the school website. They whole thing was way off. I was sort of fumbling around, but I was laughing and remarking that it was an off day.

I even said, "I guess none of you grew up in America in the Seventies." Pause. "Ha. None of you even grew up in the Seventies!" Then I told them about the game show "Name that Tune."

At the end of the class, there was a guy who had never been in class before. He was the boyfriend of one of the Finnish girls. I said, "Please don't think of me as representative of the college."

His girlfriend said, "None of the other classes were any better."

Sort of a nasty little comment. I laughed at its directness and meanness. (They are known for that sort of quip.)

"But at least you're entertaining. We like you."

Later I told the whole thing to one of my colleagues, Tammy. She said, "Oh yeah. One of the other girls in the class (who went to Finland and is, thus, nasty like them) said, 'Yeah, we already know most of what he's teaching because we learned it already in Finland. But we don't mind going to his class because he's funny.'"

I make business classes funny. It really is just me up there talking, being Philip.
