Invigilating
According to the Cambridge Dicitonary Online, the word "invigilating"" means, "to watch people taking an exam in order to check that they do not cheat." That's what I've been doing for two hours each day this week.At the hogeschool, when I invigilated last Friday, I was able to check my e-mail, read, listen to my ipod, etc. It was a long time to sit, but I remained entertained.
At the high school, we are not allowed to do anything. We sit and look at the classroom. We try to catch people cheating. When the little shits stretch and turn to look at the paper of the student behind them, we say, "Ryan. Turn around." When they need extra paper, we get it for them. We watch. It's probably one of the most boring two hour stretches I've ever spent.
When I got out of my last little session a few minutes ago, I said, "Wow. That was a long two hours." The guy who was working with me (and who showed up an hour into my two hour stint) said, "I had five hours of invigilating today."
Five hours? That's ridiculous. It's literally sitting and looking at students. If you're ever asked to do it, try to get out of it.
