Early to Rise

I have a friend in town this week. Butch. He came in on Saturday morning and he's leaving next Saturday afternoon. It's a quick trip, but he seems to be doing enough. He's enjoying himself.

The problem is that Hans and I generally sleep late on Saturdays. This puts a little sleep into the sleep bank that I've been overdrawing on all week. It's not a great system, but it's what I'm doing now. I get enough sleep - generally.

So we had to get up early to meet Butch's plane at Schiphol. Then we sat and talked to him for a while in the morning before he went to meet a friend for lunch. After that, we cleaned and shopped because we had Butch and another friend over for dinner Saturday night.

We awoke fairly early on Sunday and went for a long drive. While everyone else nodded in and out, I (the only driver in the bunch) drove. There were only three of us and Butch is a native New Yorker and Hans is not comfortable driving.

I got up early on Monday, went to work and then went to the ballet on Monday evening - plus a drink at Butch's hotel. That night, I set my alarm clock for 6:15 - instead of 5:45 - so I could get an extra precious half hour of sleep.

On Tuesday morning, got up and got to school for a teacher's work day. I got home and did my best to do some research for a class I have today that is about the early settlers in America. (It'll actually be very interesting. I get to talk for an hour about it. It's one of the things I do really well, soak up knowledge and squeeze it out again.) Last night, I went to choir and came home to print a bunch of stuff out so that I could read it on the train.

This morning, the clock was still set for 6:15, so when I got up, I had 20 minutes to get out the door. I'm someone who likes to dawdle in the mornings. I like to get up and drink a cup or two of tea, surf a little, iron a shirt, make sure my bag is packed correctly, blah, blah, blah. I was out the door in 20 minutes.

So I'm really tired. This probably worked in my favor as I had one of my lower level classes today and I was not in a great mood. So I was more able to be stern. I was still happy and I made jokes, but I wasn't the bundle of fun I usually am.

We'll see how it turns out.
